Laguna la Maria

Laguna La Maria – Colima – Mexico

Laguna “the Maria” This lake is 22 km into the mountains from Comala. There is a recreational center with cabins (hotel), camping and modern RV spaces and a restaurant. There are small boats for rent but I’d suggest not for fishing since the lake water looks stagnant this time of year. We did see lots of fish along the shore.

We walked the kilometer to the lake and camping-picnic areas but you can drive all the way in along the lake. The only other people there were some ‘birders’ walking with their guide. Everything would be greener after the rainy season but it is still a very pretty area. Take your mosquito repellant. Cost to enter is/was $8 pesos per person.

Be sure to continue further up the road that leads to Lago Maria to the small town of La Yerba Buena that ws legally closed due to volcano danger. It was famous for it’s coffee and people still live there. Also the Colimotl processing plant in Cofradia de Suchitlan a few miles down the road.
