Enanitos Toreros – Midget Bullfighters
The Villa Obregon Candelaria Festival Melaque, Jalisco – Mexico
There are at least five or six groups of Midget Bullfighters in Mexico. I’m not sure who the group was that visited Melaque except that there’s a foto of their poster below. Other groups have a much larger show but they may have been down-sized for our small town. This is really a family and kids party with no harm to the bulls except a little tail pulling. The bulls are only 2-3 years old so are in scale with the small Toreadors. A few clowns for fun and safety and a woman that impersonates popular singers. Fun, light hearted and more like a rodeo than a real bullfight which I have no interest in.
It’s a spectacle repeated on weekends across Mexico, as troupes of dwarf bullfighters thrill audiences at fairs, patron-saint festivals and nightclubs. Some of them tour the United States, where they bring a dose of nostalgia to Mexican migrants from Oregon to Florida.
