This trip is from March I think - back when there were Gringos here
wanting to take trips thru Mexico. Glen (in some of the fotos) and
I spent two nights in the Colima area before taking this drive. We
first headed up to Mazamitla via the back way thru Tuxpan - very nice
drive. After Mazamitla we headed over to Jiquilpan and Sahuayo
(in Michoacan) and along the south shore of Lake Chapala to Jocotepec.
We found a nice little motel on the outskirts of Jocotepec for two
nights and visited Ajijic, Chapala and as far east as Mezcala.
We then
headed off west across the valley into the coastal mountains to Tapalpa.
Lots of people comment on how attractive Mazamitla is but Tapalpa is
more roomy and still very Colonial. We weren't able to find the
surrounding tourist sites so we headed south on a very nice road that
soon turned to difficult dirt. Not wanting to back track we
pushed on for 30 kilometers or so until we came into the agricultural
town of Venustiano Carranza. Quiet little town with a view of the
twin volcanoes on the edge of Colima state. We wanted
to find the back way into Colima thru Comala west of the volcanoes but
it was getting late and we cut over to Sayula and back to the carretera
and down to Manzanillo for our last night. Then back to Melaque.
